William Coleman III and Phillip Dutton both maintained their leads in the final show jumping phase to win the CCI3* and CIC3* divisions respectively at the 2013 Volvo CCI3* Bromont Three Day Event, The Todd Sandler Challenge, held June 6 to 9 at the Bromont Olympic Horse Park in Bromont, Quebec.

The Olympic equestrian discipline of Three Day Eventing is often referred to as the triathlon of equestrian sport, with the phases of dressage, cross-country, and show jumping taking place over three consecutive days.  While the cross-country is considered the most thrilling phase, the show jumping at Bromont held plenty of excitement, as scores were very close among the top contenders in all four International Equestrian Federation (FEI) sanctioned divisions.

William Coleman III of the United States became the winner of the CCI3* division and the Todd Sandler Challenge.  Riding Obos O’Reilly, owned by Four-Star Eventing Group Syndicate, Coleman posted one of only two clear show jumping rounds in the CCI3* division.  The challenging show jumping course was designed by Mauricio Garcia of Puerto Rico, who was assisted by Canada’s Jean Pierre Ayotte.

“I do love this event,” said Coleman, who was a member of the U.S. Eventing Team at the 2012 London Olympics.  “I like the way it’s run and the people who run it.  I always have a good time here.  Some people have events where they tend to do well, and Bromont is one for me.”

 

Finishing second in the CCI3* was Canadian Olympian Selena O’Hanlon of Kingston, ON, who piloted Foxwood High to the only other clear round in the division, rising three spots from fifth place following Saturday’s cross-country phase.  O’Hanlon also rode two other horses in the CCI3*, both of which finished in the placings.  With Bellaney Rock she was fourth, while A First Romance placed 12th.

“This was the first CCI3* for all three of my horses,” said O’Hanlon.  “I am thrilled with how all of them went this week, and I’m happy to be taking them home happy and sound.  I’m looking forward to the future with all three of them.”

In the CIC3* division, Phillip Dutton maintained the lead he established after cross-country with Team Rebecca’s Ben.  In the CIC3* division, competitors rode a shortened cross-country course compared to the CCI3*, but the final show jumping phase was over the same course as the CCI3*.  Dutton had one fence down in the show jumping, but with a two rail lead, he still comfortably finished first with 72.1 penalties.

“I am overall pleased with Ben; he’s a very talented horse,” said Dutton, a two-time Olympic Team gold medalist for his native Australia who now competes for the U.S.  “Ben’s work is getting better and higher quality.”

Dutton, a frequent competitor at Bromont, was once again impressed with the calibre of competition.

“Bromont and Fair Hill CCI3* are the two hardest competitions of this level in North America in terms of terrain and course design,” he said in reference to the annual events held in Quebec and Maryland.

Moving up to second place with one of only two clear show jumping rounds in the CIC3* division was Canada’s Jessica Phoenix on Pavarotti, the horse with which she won individual gold and team silver at the 2011 Pan American Games.

“Pavarotti was awesome all weekend long, and he was so rideable on cross-country,” said Phoenix, who was the highest placed Canadian at the 2012 London Olympics.  “He couldn’t have jumped any better.”

In the CCI2* division, Erin Sylvester of the United States managed to maintain her lead, despite a less than perfect show jumping round riding Mettraise.  Her eight fault round and final score of 70.4 penalties stood up against the field of 14, after only four riders went clear in the show jumping.

“Overall I was really happy with my horse today; she got excited in the ring but she still tried really hard,” said Sylvester.  “This is a big improvement over where she was even a few months ago.”

American Buck Davidson moved up five places in the CCI2* show jumping phase, vaulting from seventh after cross-country to second place after posting one of the division’s few clear rounds with Santa’s Keeper.  Davidson was also third with Knight Lion.

In the CCI1* division, Waylon Roberts of Port Perry, ON, was the only Canadian winner at the 2013 Volvo Bromont Three Day Event.  It wasn’t an easy victory for Roberts, who went into the show jumping with Yarrow only 4.8 penalties ahead of Erin Sylvester on Paddy the Caddy, who had added a single time penalty to their score in the show jumping.  That one time penalty turned out to be just enough to keep Roberts in the top spot.  After taking one rail and adding four faults to his score, Roberts finished just 0.8 points ahead of Sylvester, with 49.7 penalties.

“I thought the course today was really well designed.  It was challenging for the level,” said Roberts, who was excited to have had such a major success with Yarrow, a six-year-old Canadian Sport Horse gelding sired by Yavari and bred by his parents, Canadian Olympians Ian Roberts and Kelly Plitz.  “I’m really excited about Yarrow.  He’s also a part of our family.”

The success of the Volvo CCI3* Bromont Three Day Event relies on the support of many sponsors and volunteers each year.  Volvo returned as title sponsor for the second year, and Bromont was included for the third time in the PRO Tour Series. The Professional Riders Organization (PRO) is a non-profit group of accomplished event riders dedicated to promoting the sport and advocating safety for horses and riders.

“We are delighted with Volvo’s involvement again this year,” said Sue Ockendon, Event Director of the Volvo CCI3* Bromont Three Day Event. “We are also grateful for the sponsorship we have received from SSG Gloves, and from Keith and Debbi Eaman.  We greatly appreciate the support from all of our sponsors.”

While the weather didn’t cooperate for much of the weekend, Ockendon says it’s a tribute to the ongoing improvements to the footing and drainage at Bromont, and to the efforts of the cross-country jump crew that the event was a success in spite of the rain.

“Jay Hambly and his crew worked very hard to make it possible for the horses to run at every fence,” said Ockendon of Bromont’s resident course builder and his team.  “They put gravel down at every fence throughout the day on Saturday.  That’s what helped the footing stay solid.”

The cross-country courses at Bromont were designed by Derek Di Grazia of the United States.  Riders agreed that Di Grazia, the resident course designer at Bromont since 2009, created tracks of world class quality at the 2013 event.

“Derek is arguably one of the best designers in the world,” said Dutton.  “What you find with his courses is consistency, and his courses are bigger than what you see in most of North America.  You can have confidence in the lines that the distances are going to work.”

The 2013 Bromont Three Day Event was host to an FEI Course for officials, technical delegates, stewards and course designers.  The course drew people from around the world to Bromont, which is in the final stages of bidding for the right to host the 2018 FEI World Equestrian Games.

“The FEI Course was very good,” said Ockendon.  “It gave people from all around the world the opportunity to come to Bromont and see how it works.”

William Coleman et Phillip Dutton remportent les honneurs du Volvo Bromont CCI3*Concours complet, Défi Todd Sandler 

William Coleman et Phillip Dutton ont conservé la tête à l’issue de la phase de saut d’obstacles en remportant respectivement la division CCI3* et CIC3* au Volvo Bromont CCI3*Concours complet, Défi Todd Sandler, qui s’est déroulé du 6 au 9 juin 2013 au Parc équestre olympique de Bromont.

Discipline olympique, le concours complet est comparable à un triathlon en sport équestre avec une phase en dressage, une phase en concours complet et une phase en saut d’obstacles, pendant 3 jours consécutifs. Bien que la phase de cross-country soit la plus populaire des 3 jours, la phase de saut d’obstacles a vraiment été enlevante avec des pointages très serrés parmi les prétendants à la victoire, et ce,  dans les 4 divisions reconnues par la Fédération équestre internationale.

William Coleman III, des États-Unis, est le gagnant de la division CCI3* et du Défi Todd Sandler. En selle sur Obos O’Reilly, propriété du syndicat Four Star Eventing, William Coleman a été l’un des deux cavaliers à réaliser un parcours sans faute dans la division CCI3*. Le parcours exigeant de saut d’obstacles a été dessiné par Mauricio Garcia, originaire de Puerto Rico, assisté du Canadien Jean-Pierre Ayotte.

«  J’adore cet événement » a exprimé William Coleman qui a été membre de l’équipe américaine des Jeux olympiques de 2012. « J’aime la façon dont  c’est mené et les gens qui l’organisent. J’ai toujours eu beaucoup de plaisir ici. Certains cavaliers performent bien dans certaines compétitions et le concours complet de Bromont me réussit bien ». 

La cavalière olympique, la Canadienne Selena O’Hanlon a terminé en 2^e position avec son cheval Foxwood High en réalisant un parcours sans faute, passant de la 5^e à la 2^e place après le cross-country du samedi. Selena O’Hanlon montait également 2 autres chevaux en CCI3., Elle s’est classée 4^e avec Bellaney Rock et 12^e avec A First Romance.

« C’était le premier CCI3* pour mes 3 chevaux » a expliqué Selena O’Hanlon. «  Je suis particulièrement heureuse de leurs résultats cette semaine et je suis contente de les ramener à la maison en santé. Je suis confiante dans l’avenir avec ces 3 chevaux. ».

Dans la division CIC 3*, Phillip Dutton a conservé l’avance qu’il avait à l’issue du cross-country avec Team Rebecca’s Ben. Le parcours de cross-country dans la division CIC3* présente les mêmes difficultés techniques qu’en CCI3* sur une distance plus courte et avec moins d’obstacles. Dans la phase de saut d’obstacles, le parcours est identique à la division CCI3*. Phillip Dutton a fait tomber une barre dans la phase de saut d’obstacles mais son avance confortable à l’issue du cross-country lui a permis de remporter la victoire avec un total de 72,1 points de pénalité.

«  Je suis vraiment content de Ben. C’est un cheval vraiment talentueux » a exprimé Phillip Dutton, double médaillé d’or pour son Australie natale, et représentant aujourd’hui les États-Unis. «  Les performances de Ben progressent constamment ».

Phillip Dutton, un compétiteur habitué à Bromont, a été encore une fois impressionné par le calibre de la compétition. « Bromont et Fair Hill CCI3* sont parmi les compétitions les plus difficiles en terme de terrain et de tracés de parcours en Amérique du Nord » a-t-il commenté en parlant des événements du Québec et du Maryland.

La Canadienne Jessica Phoenix a pris la 2^e place avec Pavarotti, cheval avec lequel elle a gagné la médaille d’or en individuel et la médaille d’argent en équipe aux Jeux panaméricains de 2011.

« Pavarotti a été extraordinaire toute la fin de semaine et très facile à mener dans le cross-country » commentait Jessica Phoenix qui a été la meilleure Canadienne aux Jeux olympiques de Londres. «  Il n’aurait pas pu mieux sauter ».

Dans la division CCI2*, Erin Sylvester des États-Unis a pu conserver son avance malgré une performance moins que parfaite dans la phase de saut d’obstacles avec Mettraise. En cumulant 2 fautes de barres (8 points), elle a obtenu un total de 70,4 points de pénalités ce qui a .été suffisant pour conserver son avance sur les 14 autres cavaliers, bien que 4 d’entres eux aient réalisé un parcours sans faute dans la phase de saut d’obstacles.

«  Aujourd’hui, globalement, je suis très contente de mon cheval ; elle était énervée dans la carrière mais elle a quand même travaillé très fort » expliquait Erin Sylvester. « Elle s’est beaucoup améliorée depuis quelques mois ».

L’Américain  Buck Davidson est passé de la 7^e position après le cross-country à la 2^e place à l’issue d’un des rares parcours sans faute en saut d’obstacles dans la division CCI2*. Buck Davidson occupe également la 3^e place avec Knight Lion.

Dans la division CCI1*, Waylon Roberts, originaire de Port Perry (ON) est le seul Canadien à avoir remporté la victoire. À l’issue du cross-country, Waylon Roberts sur Yarrow devançait seulement de 4 points Erin Sylvester en selle sur Paddy the Caddy. Après la phase de saut d’obstacles, Waylon Roberts a devancé Erin Sylvester par 0,8 points de pénalités pour un total de 49,7 points de pénalités.

«  Le parcours d’aujourd’hui était très bien dessiné et très exigeant pour le niveau » a commenté Waylon Roberts qui était très heureux de remporter les honneurs avec Yarrow, Cheval Canadien de Sport, issu de Yavari et élevé par ses parents, les olympiens Ian Roberts et Kelly Plitz. «  Je suis très heureux de Yarrow. Il fait partie de la famille. »

Chaque année, le succès d’un tel événement comme le Volvo Bromont CCI3*Concours complet, Défi Todd Sandler, dépend des nombreux bénévoles et commanditaires. Le commanditaire principal, Volvo, supporte pour une 2^e année consécutive le CCI*** Bromont. Pro Tour Serie est intégré pour la 3^e année successive au Volvo Bromont CCI3* Concours complet, Défi Todd Sandler. Malgré la température difficile de la fin de la semaine, Sue Ockendon reconnait les améliorations et les capacités de drainage du terrain à Bromont. Les efforts de toute l’équipe de terrain de cross-country en ont fait un succès.

«Jay Hambly et son équipe ont travaillé très fort pour que les chevaux puissent aborder chacun des obstacles » explique Sue Ockendon. «  Ils ont du étendre du gravier devant chaque obstacle durant toute la journée de samedi. C’est ce qui a fait que chaque approche demeurait sécuritaire ».

Les parcours de cross-country ont été construits par l’Américain Derek Di Grazia. À l’unanimité, les cavaliers ont convenu que les parcours créés par Derek Di Grazia étaient de catégorie mondiale à cette édition 2013.

«  Derek est un des meilleurs dessinateurs du monde » commentait Phillip Dutton. «  On retrouve dans ses parcours de la constance. Ils sont parmi les plus impressionnants en Amérique du Nord.Nous pouvons être confiants dans les trajectoires et les distances entre chaque obstacle ».

Volvo Bromont CCI3* Concours complet, Défi Todd Sandler a été également l’hôte d’une activité de formation FEI de juges en concours complet, de dessinateurs de parcours, de délégués techniques et de commissaires. Cette formation a attiré des participants à travers le monde à Bromont.

«  Cette formation FEI était excellente » a commenté Sue Ockendon. «  Elle leur a permis de constater la façon de travailler à Bromont ».

William Coleman III and Phillip Dutton lead the CCI3* and CIC3* divisions, respectively, following the cross-country phase of the 2013 Volvo CCI3* Bromont Three Day Event, The Todd Sandler Challenge, running June 6 to 9 at the Bromont Olympic Horse Park in Bromont, Quebec.

The Olympic equestrian discipline of Three Day Eventing is often referred to as the triathlon of equestrian sport, with the phases of dressage, cross-country, and show jumping taking place over three consecutive days.  The cross-country phase is the most thrilling of the three, and weather often plays a role, as it did on a wet cross-country day in Bromont.  Intermittent rain over the past two days resulted in challenging conditions for competitors in all four International Equestrian Federation (FEI) sanctioned divisions.

In the CCI3*, William Coleman III of the United States improved on his second place position after the opening phase of dressage to take over the lead following the cross-country.  Coleman, of Gordonsville, VA, was a member of the U.S. Olympic Eventing Team at the 2012 London Olympic Games.  He piloted the relatively inexperienced Obos O’Reilly through a clear cross-country jumping round, adding eight time penalties to his dressage score for a cumulative score of 58.2 going into Sunday’s final show jumping phase.

“My horse was a little bit green all the way around, but he’s game and gutsy,” said Coleman of his cross-country experience.  “His attitude and bravado were such that I did feel he would go around, and I thought he handled it all really well.”

Currently in second place in the CCI3* division is Sarah Cousins of the United States on Tsunami.  Cousins was the only competitor in the division to jump clear cross-country and within the optimum time of ten minutes.  She adds no penalties to her dressage score of 64.2 going into the final show jumping phase.  Out of a starting field of 22 horses and riders, all but four completed the cross-country, 11 of them with no jumping penalties, including all of the riders currently placed in the top eight.  Canada’s Kyle Carter, who has had an incredible comeback season with his 2008 Olympic and 2010 World Equestrian Games partner Madison Park, is in third place, hot on the heels of Cousins with 64.4 penalties.

“I definitely felt it was one of the tougher three star courses I’ve seen in the last couple of years,” said Carter, a native of Calgary, AB.  “I thought it rode better than it walked, which is a testament to the course designer.”

All of the courses at Bromont were designed by resident course designer, Derek Di Grazia of the United States, who was assisted by Canadian course builder Jay Hambly.

The CIC3* is at the same level of difficulty as the CCI3*, but a shorter course and fewer jumping efforts make it less taxing on the competitors.  American Phillip Dutton of West Grove, PA, managed to hang onto the lead he established in the dressage phase of the CIC3* with Team Rebecca’s Ben, in spite of incurring 21.2 time penalties for a total score of 68.1 after cross-country.  Dutton, a two-time Olympic team gold medalist for his native Australia, now competes for the U.S.

“It was a quite challenging course as we knew it would be, and the weather added a little bit to that,” said Dutton.  “Overall, the footing at the jumps was very good.  Ben actually galloped pretty well, and that part I was pleased with.  He’s not bred to go really fast, but he doesn’t get strong getting to the jumps, so I could save time on the approach.”

Chasing Dutton into the show jumping phase is fellow American Lauren Kieffer, who is in second place after a clear cross-country round with R. F. Cosima, owned by Jacqueline Mars.  Kieffer’s two-day score of 71.5 leaves less than a single rail between herself and Dutton.  Just five of the nine entries in the CIC3* completed the cross-country course.  All five had clear rounds, though none was within the optimum time of six minutes and 45 seconds.

In the CCI2* division, Erin Sylvester of the United States has taken over first place with Mettraise after a clear round, adding just 2.4 time penalties for a two-day score of 62.4 penalties.  Sylvester is also in second place in the CCI1* division with Paddy the Caddy.  Behind Sylvester in second place is fellow American Buck Davidson, who had the only time penalty-free round of the day in the CCI2* riding Knight Lion.  Davidson is just one show jumping rail behind Sylvester with 66.4 penalties.

“I always feel cautiously good going into cross-country with this mare because she tries very hard,” said Sylvester of Mettraise.  “It didn’t end up raining all that hard, but we went at the end of the day and the going had got a bit deep.”

In the CCI1* division, Canadian Waylon Roberts of Port Perry, ON, moved up one placing from his second placed dressage standing after he and his homebred Yarrow enjoyed a clear round with no time penalties to finish the cross-country on their dressage score of 45.7 penalties.  Roberts maintains only the narrowest of leads over Sylvester and Paddy the Caddy, who also jumped fault-free to remain on their dressage score of 49.1 penalties.  Roberts, a member of Canada’s silver medalist eventing team at the 2007 Pan American Games, is also in sixth place in the CCI1* division with Orion 49.

“Yarrow is just six and this is his second one-star event,” said Roberts, 24.  “He felt great right from the start.  Being second after dressage, I went out there knowing what I had to do.  There were some green moments, but Yarrow answered me really well.  I’m very pleased with him.  Both of my boys were great today.”

Despite the damp weather, spectators filled the stands around the water jump on cross-country, the complex that always draws the biggest crowd, and often the most dramatic action.  Bromont, the only FEI three star sanctioned three day event in Canada, draws North America’s top eventers, who know they can count on high calibre competition in the beautiful setting of Quebec’s Eastern Townships.

The final horse inspection at the Volvo CCI3* Bromont Three Day Event will commence at 8 a.m. on Sunday, following by the third and final phase of show jumping.  Scores among the top contenders are close in all four divisions, which will make for an exciting climax to the 2013 Volvo CCI3* Bromont Three Day Event.

William Coleman et Phillip Dutton en tête après le cross-country au Volvo Bromont CCI3*Concours complet, Défi Todd Sandler

William Coleman III et Phillip Dutton mènent respectivement dans la division CCI3* et CIC3* après la phase de cross–country au Volvo Bromont CCI3*Concours complet, Défi Todd Sandler qui se tient du 6 au 9 juin 2013 au Parc équestre olympique de Bromont.

Discipline olympique, le concours complet est comparable à un triathlon en sport équestre avec une phase en dressage, une phase en concours complet et une phase en saut d’obstacles, pendant 3 jours consécutifs.  La phase de cross-country est la plus excitante des 3 jours et la température joue souvent un rôle important comme ce fut le cas à Bromont pendant cette journée pluvieuse.  Plusieurs défis se sont ajoutés en raison de la pluie intermittente des derniers jours.

Dans la division CCI3*, William Coleman III, des États-Unis, a amélioré sa 2^e position suite au dressage, pour prendre la tête à la suite du cross-country.  William Coleman, originaire de Gordonsville (VA) a été membre de l’équipe olympique à Londres.  Il a réalisé un parcours sans faute avec Obos O’Reilly, un cheval ayant relativement peu d’expérience.  Il cumule un total de 58,2 points de pénalité avant la phase finale de saut d’obstacles qui se tiendra dimanche le 9 juin 2013.

« Mon cheval est peu expérimenté mais il a de la volonté et de l’énergie » a commenté William Coleman en parlant de son expérience sur le cross-country.  «  Son attitude et sa bravoure ont été telles que je sentais qu’il pouvait réussir et je trouve qu’il s’est très bien débrouillé ».

Sarah Cousins des États-Unis, sur Tsunami est actuellement en 2^e place dans la division CCI3*.  Sarah Cousins est la seule à avoir réalisé un parcours sans faute à l’intérieur du temps alloué 10 minutes.  Elle n’ajoute aucun point de pénalités à son pointage de 64,2 avant la dernière phase de saut d’obstacles.  Parmi les 22 participants, tous sauf 4 cavaliers ont complété le cross-country, 11 d’entre eux sans pénalité de saut, incluant tous les cavaliers qui sont dans le Top 8.  Le Canadien, Kyle Carter qui connaît un retour incroyable depuis les Jeux olympiques de 2008 et les Jeux équestres mondiaux de 2010, est en 3^e position avec Madison Park, tout juste derrière Sarah Cousins, avec 64,4 points de pénalité.

« Je suis convaincu que c’était un des parcours 3 étoiles les plus difficiles que j’ai vu depuis les dernières années » a confié Kyle Carter, natif de Calgary (AB).  «  Ce parcours était plus facile à cheval qu’à pied, ce qui est un témoignage du dessinateur de parcours ».

Tous les parcours de Bromont ont été dessiné par Derek di Grazia des États-Unis, assisté par le constructeur canadien, Jay Hambly.

La division CIC3* comporte le même niveau de difficultés que la division CCI3* mais sur un parcours plus court et avec moins d’obstacles.  L’Américain Phillip Dutton, de West Grove (PA), a pu conforter son avance suite à la phase de dressage, avec Team Rebecca’s Ben, malgré 21.2 points de pénalité pour un total après le cross-country de 68.1 points de pénalité.  Phillip Dutton, double médaillé d’or olympique pour son Australie natale, concourt désormais pour les États-Unis.

«  C’était un parcours difficile comme nous savions qu’il serait et la température a ajouté encore plus de difficultés » commentait Phillip Dutton.  «  La qualité du sol prêt des sauts était excellente.  Ben a très bien galopé et je suis très fier de cet aspect de son parcours.  Il n’est pas entraîné pour aller très vite, il n’accélère pas à l’approche des sauts, ce qui a permis de sauver du temps dans les approches ».

L’Américaine Lauren Kieffer est en 2^e position grâce à un parcours sans faute, avec R.F. Cosima, propriété de Jacqueline Mars.  Son pointage pour les 2 jours est de 71,5.  Seulement des 5 des 9 participants inscrits au CIC3* ont complété le parcours de cross-country.  Les 5 cavaliers ont réalisé un parcours sans faute mais aucun n’a pu respecter le temps alloué de 6 minutes et 45 secondes.

Dans la division CCI2*, Erin Sylvester, des États-Unis, s’empare de la 1ere place avec son cheval Mettraise, après un parcours sans faute mais avec 2,4 points de pénalité, pour un total des 2 jours de 62,4 points de pénalité.  Erin Sylvester est également en 2eme place dans la division CCI1* avec son cheval Paddy the Caddy.  L’Américain Buck Davidson est en 2^e position derrière Erin Sylvester.  Il a été le seul à réaliser un parcours sans pénalité de temps dans la division CCI2* avec Knight Lion.  Buck Davidson talonne Erin Sylvester avec 66,4 points de pénalité.

«  Je me sens toujours relativement confiant au départ du parcours de cross-country avec cette jument car elle est courageuse » commente Erin Sylvester au sujet de Mettraise.  « Il n’a pas plu aussi abondamment que prévu mais nous passions à la fin de la journée, le terrain se creusait ».

Dans la division CCI1*, le Canadien Waylon Roberts, de Port Perry (ON) est passé du 2^e rang en dressage en première position après que lui et son cheval Yarrow aient réalisé un parcours sans faute et sans pénalité de temps.  Il conserve son pointage de 45,7.  Waylon Roberts détient une très mince avance sur Erin Sylvester et Paddy the Caddy qui a également fait un parcours sans faute pour conserver après le dressage, un pointage de 49,1.  Waylon Roberts, médaillé d’argent par équipe aux Jeux panaméricains de 2007, est également en 6^e position dans la division CCI1* avec Orion 49.

« Yarrow a juste 6 ans et c’est son 2^e parcours de niveau 1 étoile » a confié Waylon Roberts, âgé de 24 ans.  « Il était très bon dès le départ.  Étant 2^e après le dressage, j’ai abordé le parcours en sachant ce que j’avais à faire.  Il y a eu des moments difficiles mais Yarrow répondait très bien.  Je suis très content de lui.  Mes 2 garçons ont été excellents aujourd’hui. »

Malgré le temps humide, les estrades étaient pleines autour du gué, la combinaison qui attire toujours le plus grand nombre de spectateurs en raison du contexte plus spectaculaire.  Volvo Bromont CCI3*Concours complet, Défi Todd Sandler est l’un des plus importants événements en concours complet en Amérique du Nord.  Il s’agit de la seule compétition de niveau 3 étoiles au Canada sanctionnée par la Fédération équestre internationale.  Bromont est unique grâce au site olympique de 1976 mais également comme région avec l’un des paysages les plus spectaculaires dans l’Est du Canada.

L’inspection finale des chevaux commencera à 8 h dimanche 9 juin juste avant la 3^e et dernière phase, le saut d’obstacles.  Les pointages sont serrés dans les 4 divisions.

Lauren Kieffer and Phillip Dutton are the early leaders following the first phase of competition at the 2013 Volvo CCI3* Bromont Three Day Event, The Todd Sandler Challenge, running June 6 to 9 at the Bromont Olympic Horse Park in Bromont, Quebec.

The Olympic equestrian discipline of Three Day Eventing is often referred to as the triathlon of equestrian sport, with the phases of dressage, cross-country, and show jumping taking place over three consecutive days.  The opening phase of dressage is now complete at the Volvo CCI3* Bromont Three Day Event, and riders are preparing for Saturday’s cross-country phase, followed by the third and final phase of show jumping on Sunday.

Leading the CCI3* division after dressage is Lauren Kieffer of the United States.  Kieffer, of Middleburg, VA, rode Team Rebecca’s Veronica to the top of a 22-horse starting field with a dressage score of 44.6 penalties.  Kieffer has a comfortable lead over second placed William Coleman III, a member of the U.S. Olympic Eventing Team in London, who earned 50.2 penalties riding Obos O’Reilly.

“My horse was great with the atmosphere here and I’m really happy with her,” said Kieffer, who is impressed by the cross-country course she will face on Saturday.  “This is my first time here and it’s beautiful.  The course is big and bold, and the questions are right out there in front of you.  There are lots of places for you to let your guard down and make a mistake.”

The CIC3* is a division held at the same level as the CCI3*, but on a shorter cross-country course with fewer jumping efforts.  After dressage, Phillip Dutton of the United States leads the CIC3* after scoring 46.9 penalties for his test riding Ben, a 12-year-old Holsteiner gelding also owned by Team Rebecca.

“Ben is a smart mover and has a really good head,” said Dutton, a two-time Olympic team gold medalist.  “He gets a bit more forward in the atmosphere of the competition, but he doesn’t get silly.  I was pleased with the trot work, but I could definitely improve the canter work still more.”

Dutton expects the real test to come on Saturday with the cross-country phase.  “There are some big fences and there is some technical stuff in there as well.  There are lots of different factors here.”

Dutton, an Olympic team veteran of both his native Australia and the U.S., holds a narrow lead over Canada’s Jessica Phoenix of Uxbridge, ON, who is less than one point behind Dutton with 47.7 penalties.  Phoenix is riding Pavarotti, her partner at the 2011 Pan American Games where she won individual gold and team silver medals for Canada.

American Sharon White leads the CCI2* division with Don Sheffield on a score of 49.8 penalties.  Holding down second place is Canada’s Jordan McDonald with 50.2 penalties.  McDonald, from Oakville, ON, is also fifth in the CCI2* division with Glencanto with 57.2 penalties.

In the CCI1* division, Jennifer Bazan of the United States leads with 44.3 penalties riding Allegretta while Waylon Roberts of Port Perry, ON, currently sits second on 45.7 penalties riding Yarrow.

The cross-country competition, the most exciting phase of the Volvo CCI3* Bromont Three Day Event, will begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday, June 8, with the CCI1* division, followed by the CCI3*, CIC3*, and CCI2* divisions.  American FEI 4*course designer Derek Di Grazia, Bromont’s resident course designer since 2009, will challenge competitors with courses of world class standards.  The cross-country fences have again been constructed by Canadian course builder Jay Hambly.

Spectators attending the Volvo CCI3* Bromont Three Day Event have the opportunity to watch some of North America’s finest equestrian athletes compete at the only annual three day event held at a former Olympic site.  The Bromont Olympic Horse Park was the site of equestrian events at the 1976 Montreal Olympic Games.  Over the past 27 years of its existence, the Volvo CCI3* Bromont Three Day Event has become one of North America’s most prestigious three day events, and is the only competition of its kind in Canada sanctioned at the three star level by the International Equestrian Federation (FEI).

Lauren Kieffer et Phillip Dutton ont dominé la phase de dressage du Volvo Bromont CCI3* Concours complet, Défi Todd Sandler qui se déroule du 6 au 9 juin 2013 au Parc équestre olympique de Bromont.

Lauren Kieffer des États-Unis (Middleburg, VA) a dominé la division CCI3* à l’issue du dressage avec sa monture Veronica, propriété de Team Rebecca, parmi 22 participants, avec un total de 44,6 points de pénalités.  Elle possède une avance confortable face à William Coleman III en selle sur Obos O’Reilly, membre de l’équipe olympique américaine à Londres, qui a récolté 50,2 points de pénalités.

«  Ma jument était fantastique dans cet atmosphère et je suis très contente d’elle. » confie Lauren Kieffer, qui est très impressionnée par le parcours de cross country auquel elle devra faire face samedi.  « C’est ma première expérience ici et c’est magnifique.  Le parcours est immense et osé.  Toutes les interrogations sont omniprésentes.  Il y a plusieurs endroits où vous pouvez relâcher la concentration et faire des erreurs. »

Le CCI3* est du même niveau que la division CIC3* mais le parcours de cross country est plus court avec moins d’efforts de saut.  Après l’épreuve de dressage, l’Américain Phillip Dutton en selle sur Ben, Holsteiner de 12 ans, propriété de Team Rebecca, domine le classement CIC3* avec 46,9 points de pénalités.

« Ben est intelligent et a une bonne tête » souligne Phillip Dutton, double médaillé d’or olympique.  « Il se laisse prendre par l’atmosphère de la compétition mais ne se laisse pas emporter.  Je suis content du travail au trot mais je pourrais définitivement améliorer le galop ».

Phillip Dutton s’attend à ce que le vrai test se passe avec la phase de cross country.  «  Il y a de gros obstacles et aussi des éléments techniques.  Plusieurs facteurs sont à considérer ».

Phillip Dutton, cavalier olympique autant pour les États-Unis comme pour l’Australie, détient une faible avance devant la Canadienne Jessica Phoenix (Uxbridge, ON) qui est à moins de 1 point derrière lui, avec 47,7 points de pénalités.  Jessica Phoenix monte Pavarotti, son partenaire aux Jeux panaméricains de 2011, où elle a gagné la médaille d’or en individuel et la médaille d’argent par équipe, pour le Canada.

L’Américaine Sharon White en selle Don Sheffield domine la division CCI2* avec 49,8 points de pénalités.  Le Canadien Jordan McDonald (Oakville, ON) est en 2eme  position avec 50,2 points de pénalités avec Prince Mayo.  Il occupe également la 5^e place de la division CCI 2* avec le cheval Glencanto, avec 57,2 points de pénalités.

Dans la division CCI 1*, l’Américaine Jennifer Bazan domine avec 43,3 points de pénalités, sur Allegretta.  Waylon Roberts (Port Perry, ON) est 2eme avec 45,7 points de pénalités, avec Yarrow.

La phase de cross country, la plus enlevante du CCI 3 * au Volvo Bromont CCI3* Concours complet, Défi Todd Sandler se tiendra le samedi 8 juin 2013 dès 9 h avec la division CCI1*, suivie des divisions CCI3*, CIC3* et CCI2*.

The 2013 Volvo CCI3* Bromont Three Day Event, The Todd Sandler Challenge, opened on Thursday, June 6, at the Bromont Olympic Horse Park in Bromont, Quebec, with the first of two days of dressage competition.  The CCI2*, one of the four divisions running at Bromont sanctioned by the International Equestrian Federation (FEI), is the first to have completed the opening phase of dressage.

The Olympic equestrian discipline of Three Day Eventing is often referred to as the triathlon of equestrian sport, with the phases of dressage, cross-country, and show jumping taking place over three consecutive days.

Leading the CCI2* division after dressage is Sharon White of the United States riding Don Sheffield.  White, of Summit Point, West Virginia, bested a starting field of 23 entries with a score of 49.8 penalties from the three-member panel of FEI judges.  White’s was the only score under 50 in the division, which put her into first place ahead of Canada’s Jordan McDonald with 50.2 penalties.  McDonald of Oakville, ON, is in second place with Prince Mayo, an eight-year-old Irish Sport Horse gelding.

“My horse is strong in the dressage,” said White of Don Sheffield, a seven-year-old Warmblood gelding bred and owned by Wiley Grosvenor of Copper Fox Farm.  “This is his first season at Intermediate level and Bromont is his first two star.”

White is looking forward to Saturday’s cross-country phase, where she hopes to maintain her lead.  “I think the course and terrain here are amazing, and how it goes on Saturday will tell me a lot about my horse.  As long as I don’t make it more complicated than it is, I think the course looks amazing.  Bromont is always so beautiful.”

Bromont’s CCI1* division saw half of its 46 entries compete in the dressage phase on Thursday.  Leading the division at the mid-way point is American Jennifer Bazan, who rode Allegretta to a score of 44.3 penalties.

In addition to the second half of the CCI1* dressage, Friday’s competition will include the dressage phase for the CCI3* and CIC3* divisions.  Hoping to defend his 2012 title in the CCI3* is Jonathan Holling of Ocala, FL.  The three star divisions have attracted a strong Canadian contingent, including the reigning Pan American Games Eventing individual gold medalist, Jessica Phoenix of Uxbridge, ON.  Phoenix will compete in the CIC3* with her Pan Am Games mount, Pavarotti.  Among the Canadians competing on Friday are Selena O’Hanlon of Kingston, ON, and Kyle Carter, a native of Calgary, AB, now residing in Florida, both of whom were members of Canada’s silver medalist team at the 2010 World Equestrian Games.

Celebrating its 27^th anniversary in 2013, Bromont is widely considered one of North America’s most important three day events.  It is the only competition of its kind in Canada, sanctioned at the three-star level by the International Equestrian Federation (FEI).  Bromont is unique not only as a competition, but as a venue, located in some of eastern Canada’s most stunning countryside.

Derek Di Grazia of the United States, Bromont’s resident course designer since 2009, has again designed the tracks for Saturday’s exciting cross-country phase, the spectator highlight of Three Day Eventing.  Di Grazia, an FEI 4* course designer, is assisted by Canadian course builder Jay Hambly.

Volvo is the title sponsor of the Bromont Three Day Event for the second year.  Bromont has also been included for a third year in the PRO Tour Series.  The Professional Riders Organization (PRO) is a non-profit group of accomplished event riders dedicated to promoting the sport and advocating safety for horses and riders.

Volvo Bromont CCI3*Concours complet, Défi Todd Sandler a débuté jeudi le 6 juin 2013 au Parc équestre olympique de Bromont, avec la première des 2 journées en dressage.  La division CCI2* est une des 4 divisions dans la programmation de cet événement sanctionné par la Fédération équestre internationale.

Discipline olympique, le concours complet est comparable à un triathlon en sport équestre avec une phase en dressage, une phase en concours complet et une phase en saut d’obstacles, pendant 3 jours consécutifs.

Après de l’épreuve de dressage de la division CCI2*, Sharon White, des États-Unis, est en tête avec son cheval Don Sheffield.  Sharon White, originaire de Summit Point en Virginie de l’Ouest, a été la meilleure des 23 concurrents avec un total de 49,8 points de pénalités.  Face aux 3 juges reconnus par la Fédération équestre internationale, elle a été la seule à obtenir un résultat sous la barre des 50 points de pénalités.  Elle devance le Canadien Jordan Mc Donald, originaire d’Oakville (ON).  En selle sur Prince Mayo, Cheval de sport Irlandais de 8 ans, il a récolté 50,2 points de pénalités.

« Mon cheval est fort en dressage » souligne Sharon White à propos de Don Sheffield, un Warmblood de 7 ans, issu de l’élevage Copper Fox Farm et propriété de Wiley Grosvenor.  « C’est sa première saison en niveau Intermédiaire et Bromont est sa première compétition 2 étoiles ».

Sharon White anticipe la phase de cross-country qui se tiendra Samedi le 8 juin 2013.  Elle espère conserver son avance.  « Je pense que le parcours et le terrain sont extraordinaires, et selon les résultats, j’en saurai plus sur mon cheval.  En autant que je ne complique pas la vie plus qu’il faut, je pense que le parcours est exceptionnel.  Bromont est toujours un bel endroit ».

La phase de dressage de la division CCI1* a également eu lieu en ce jeudi 6 juin 2013.  La moitié des 46 participants se sont présentés.  À l’issue de cette première partie, l’Américaine Jennifer Bazan avec son cheval Allegretta mène avec un total de 44,3 de points de pénalités.

En plus de la seconde partie de la phase de dressage CCI1*, les épreuves de dressage des divisions CCI3* et CIC 3* se tiendront vendredi le 7 juin 2013.  Jonathan Holling, originaire d’Ocala, espère conserver son titre de 2012 dans la division CCI 3*.  Les divisions 3 étoiles ont attiré un fort contingent canadien avec Jessica Phoenix (Uxbridge, ON) médaillée d’or en individuel aux derniers Jeux panaméricains. Elle concourra avec Pavarotti, sa monture des Jeux panaméricains.  Selena O’Hanlon (Kingston, ON), Kyle Carter (Calgary, AB) résidant maintenant en Floride, tous deux membres de l’équipe canadienne médaillée d’argent par équipe aux Jeux équestres mondiaux de 2010, seront également de la compétition vendredi.

Bromont, Quebec – The 2013 Volvo CCI3* Bromont Three Day Event, The Todd Sandler Challenge, will get under way at the Bromont Olympic Horse Park in Bromont, Quebec, on June 6, concluding on June 9.  Over the past 27 years, Bromont has attained elite status as one of North America’s most important three day events.   It is the only competition of its kind in Canada, sanctioned at the three-star level by the International Equestrian Federation (FEI).

In 2013, the Bromont Three Day Event has once again attracted many of North America’s top international eventing riders, including Olympic, World Championship and Pan American Games medalists.  Among the entries for the home country is Canada’s top placed team member from the 2012 London Olympic Three Day Event, Jessica Phoenix of Uxbridge, ON.

“Bromont is a really important event for us Canadians.  It is the closest event for us at that level and calibre of competition,” said Phoenix.  “Bromont is a destination for our upper level horses, and doing this level in Canada is so exciting.  We are very lucky to have this competition in Canada.”

Phoenix will compete with three horses at Bromont including Pavarotti, the horse on which she won individual gold and team silver medals at the 2011 Pan American Games in Mexico.  The 11-year-old Westphalian gelding owned by Don Good will compete in the CIC3*, a division first offered at Bromont in 2012 at the request of U.S. and Canadian Olympic team selectors, and an instant hit with competitors.

“I think Pavarotti is in really fine form, and I’m excited to be at Bromont with him,” said Phoenix.  “I think the course will be very suitable for him.  I am also pleased that his owner, Don Good, will be able to attend Bromont and watch his horse compete.”

Another Canadian team veteran competing at Bromont is Selena O’Hanlon of Kingston, ON.  O’Hanlon was a member of Canada’s silver medal-winning three day event team at the 2010 World Equestrian Games (WEG) in Lexington, KY.  O’Hanlon has three horses entered in the CCI3* division, including the horse with which she was Phoenix’s team mate at the 2011 Pan American Games, where Canada won team silver.  Calgary native Kyle Carter, who was also a member of Canada’s 2010 silver medalist WEG team, will compete in the CCI3* with his 2010 WEG and 2008 Olympic Games partner, Madison Park.

Two winners from the 2012 Bromont Three Day Event will be returning in 2013, including the defending champion of the CCI3*, The Todd Sandler Challenge, Jonathan Holling of Ocala, FL.  Holling won Bromont’s top division in 2012 riding a three-star rookie, Downtown Harrison.  He will attempt to defend his title in the CCI3* riding another first time three-star horse, Zapotek B, owned by Team Rebecca.

“This is my horse’s first season at this level, and Bromont will be his first three-star event,” said Holling, who isn’t taking the prospect of a second consecutive victory for granted.  “Every horse is different, but I’m certainly not coming to Bromont to lose.”

Holling has had a number of successes at Bromont over the years, including winning his first ever CCI in 1998.  “I love Bromont,” he said.  “It’s my favourite place!”

Also returning to the Volvo CCI3* Bromont Three Day Event after victory in 2012 is Bruce (Buck) Davidson, Jr. of Unionville, PA.  Davidson won the CCI1* division in 2012 riding Copper Beach.  A member of the gold medalist United States 2011 Pan American Games team, Davidson has two horses entered in the CCI2*, and one in the CCI1* division.

“Bromont is a beautiful and fun place to go at the beginning of summer,” said Davidson.  “Every year the event gets better and better.  The courses are fantastic and definitely up to the level.  The horses seem to enjoy Bromont and the owners enjoy it too.”

Volvo Bromont CCI3* Concours complet, Défi Todd Sandler se tiendra du 6 au 9 juin 2013 au Parc équestre olympique de Bromont.  Au cours des 27 dernières années, l’événement est devenu la compétition de concours complet la plus importante en Amérique du Nord avec des cavaliers d’élite.  Il s’agit de la seule compétition au Canada de niveau 3 étoiles sanctionnée par la Fédération équestre internationale.

L’édition 2013 du CCI 3* Volvo va attirer une fois de plus, de nombreux cavaliers nord-américains, l’élite, les cavaliers olympiques, les médaillés des Championnats du monde et des Jeux Panaméricains.  Jessica Phoenix originaire d’Uxbridge (ON), membre de l’équipe olympique canadienne de Londres, sera présente.

« Bromont est un événement vraiment important pour nous, les Canadiens.  C’est un événement de haut calibre, accessible » explique Jessica Phoenix.  « Bromont est la destination pour nos chevaux et concourir à ce niveau au Canada est très excitant.  Nous sommes très chanceux d’avoir une compétition à ce niveau chez nous ».

Jessica Phoenix concourra avec 3 chevaux, avec entre autre, Pavarotti, monture avec laquelle elle avait remporté une médaille d’or en individuel et une médaille d’argent en équipe lors des Jeux Panaméricains 2011 à Mexico.  Le Westphalien, propriété de Don Gool concourra dans la division CIC3*.  Cette division a été offerte pour la première fois en 2012 à la demande des sélectionneurs des équipes olympiques canadienne et américaine.  Elle a connu un très bon succès auprès des cavaliers.

«  Je pense que Pavarotti est vraiment en forme.  Je suis très heureuse d’être avec lui à Bromont » a confié Jessica Phoenix.  «  Je pense que le parcours sera très approprié pour lui.  Je suis également très contente que son propriétaire, Don Good, soit en mesure d’être à Bromont et qu’il puisse assister à la compétition. ».

Selena O’Hanlon, originaire de Kingston (ON) sera également présente.  Selena O’Hanlon a été membre de l’équipe canadienne lors des Jeux équestres mondiaux 2010 à Lexington.  L’équipe canadienne avait remporté la médaille d’argent.  À Bromont, elle concourra avec 3 chevaux dans la division CCI3*, avec entre autres, le cheval avec lequel elle a été membre de l’équipe canadienne aux Jeux Panaméricains en 2011.  Kyle Carter, native de Calgary, membre de l’équipe canadienne médaillée d’argent aux Jeux équestres mondiaux 2010, participera à Bromont dans la division CCI3* avec son partenaire des Jeux olympiques 2008 et des Jeux équestres mondiaux 2010, Madison Park.

Les vainqueurs du CCI 3* Volvo de 2012 reviennent en 2013.  Jonathan Holling, originaire d’Ocala (FL) défendra son titre de champion de la division CCI3*, Defi Todd Sandler.  Il avait remporté avec le cheval Downtown Harrison. Cette année, il tentera de conserver son titre avec un autre cheval, Zapotek, propriété de Team Rebecca.

« C’est la première saison à ce niveau pour mon cheval et Bromont sera sa première compétition 3 étoiles » explique Jonathan Holling qui ne prend pas pour acquis une seconde victoire consécutive.  « Chaque cheval est différent, mais je ne viens pas à Bromont pour perdre ».

Jonathan Holling a connu de nombreux succès à Bromont. Il y a remporté sa première victoire en CCI en 1998.  « J’aime Bromont » confit-il. « C’est mon endroit préféré ! ».

L’Américain, Bruce Davidson Jr, originaire d’Unionville (PA), victorieux en 2012 dans la division CCI3* sera de retour cette année avec deux chevaux, l’un dans la division CCI2*, l’autre dans la division CCI1*.  Bruce Davidson a été médaillé d’or par équipe aux Jeux panaméricains 2011.

« Bromont est un très bel endroit agréable » confit Bruce Davidson.  « Chaque année, l’événement s’améliore.  Les parcours sont fantastiques et de grande qualité.  Les chevaux semblent apprécier Bromont et les propriétaires également ».

Le dessinateur de parcours, l’Americain Derek di Grazia, a élu domicile Volvo Bromont CCI3* Concours complet, Défi Todd Sandler depuis 2009.  Cette année, il concevra à nouveau les parcours des 4 divisions.  Dessinateur de parcours accrédité FEI 4*, il est considéré comme étant l’un des meilleurs au monde.  Il sera assisté du constructeur, le Canadien Jay Hambly.
